Key Kansas lawmakers see veto of milk bill standing April 24, 2009By The Associated Press TOPEKA - Two key Kansas legislators doubt supporters of a milk labeling bill can override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' veto. The bill would have required dairy producers who label their products as being free of synthetic hormones to carry a disclaimer suggesting such a distinction doesn't matter. Both Senate President Steve Morris, a Hugoton Republican, and House Agriculture Committee Chairman Larry Powell, a Garden City Republican, noted Friday that the bill didn't have two-thirds majorities in either chamber. Two-thirds majorities would be necessary to override Sebelius' veto. Sebelius says the bill would make it hard for consumers to get clear information about dairy products. Supporters say the bill would prevent consumers from being misled. |
