Legislative Alert

Please read SB 595, do your own research and call your state Rep and Senator to let them know your opinion on this very important issue.

SB 595 may well be the most important ag related legislation to be discussed in our KS Statehouse this year. If passed, it will negate any positive claim you desire to use to promote your own food production. There already exists a food label law, the italicized portion is what may change. It specifically deals with claims that would be unconfirmed in a lab.

Norm Oeding (WFC member) traveled to Topeka on 2-26-08 to give opposing testimony at an 8:30 am hearing in our KS capital building. All the proponents of the bill were allowed to give their testimonies and the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 am. Senator Taddikan (Chair, Ag Committee) stated that those wanting to speak in opposition would be able to at 8:30 am the following day. Lynn and Marjorie Van Buren of the Topeka Food Co-op were able to be there both days and gave Norm's testimony, in addition to their own and others.

Groups in opposition of this bill included: KS Livestock Assoc, KS Cattlemans Assoc, KS Dept of Ag, and Dillons. Many individuals from the KC Food Circle & I-70 corridor were there also in opposition.

The Hutch News interviewed 2 KS dairy farmers, including Jason Wiebe (WFC member) (read more here) about this proposed law change.
